Mild-mannered working stiff by day; foul-mouthed jewelry maker by night.
Falena" in Italian means moth in English. "Luna" in Italian means moon in English. The first two parts of my shop name are a nod to my Italian ancestry. Yes, it's grammatically incorrect in Italian; that's a nod to the fact that the spelling of my last name went through some awkward changes after my great grandparents immigrated to the United States.
But, why moth? Moths can be pests after all. Some even associate them with decay and death. Personally, I have quite an affinity for moths; especially for how they live in the darkness of night and persisting through drastic changes. Moths are quite beautiful--even the little grey or brown species you more frequently see at night. Next time you encounter one, have a closer look; you may come away with a new appreciation.
Why moon? Like many species of moths, I'm a bit of a night owl. Full moons over the mountains in Montana are a sight to behold! Also, my favorite metal to work in is silver, which is symbolic of the moon to some.
These two concepts symbolize some of my inspirations and my approach to creativity. Additionally, parts of my identity influence my work: I am a feminist and a proud member of the LGBTQIA community. I also unapologetically support the right to an abortion, reproductive justice, antiracist causes, and freedom from religion.
I've been teaching myself how to make jewelry for the majority of my adult life. Of late, I've taken up making jewelry using hand fabrication techniques as well as vitreous enamel on metals. It has been a fun journey, and I'm honored to share my work with all of you!
Thanks so much for taking the time to look at my creations!
